Though I have definitely found it to be inferior to a power mower in its ability to pass over many a tall blade of grass or weed, its superiority in its ease of use and dependability has sold me on them for life. I would never use a power mower again. (Not with my size lawn anyway).The rotary blades on the hand mower do not sharpen, nor do they cut the same way as the single blade design of a power mower. While power mowers can be easily sharpened at an angle with just a file if necessary, the rotary blades of the hand mower are sharpened flat across the face of the blade. Something very difficult to do by hand even if you had the mower completely disassembled. This very simple three piece system consists of a brush, a crank handle, and a small container of grinding compound. The instructions that come with the kit are pretty simple without a lot of detail, but describe it well enough for you to get the job done. Personally, I found the hardest part of the whole job at the very beginning. Removing the small “C” clamp that holds the wheel on. Though the instructions simply stated that one should pry off the C ring by merely “sticking a regular slotted screw driver into the opening” of it, for me there was nothing at all “merely” about it. No amount of prying, twisting, pushing or swearing allowed me to get a grip on the C clamp with just a screwdriver, or even two of them. All I ended up doing for 15 minutes was chase it around the axle. I finally got it off by concluding that I would sacrifice it by ruining it with needle nose pliers, and then putting on a new one. (As it turned out, I easily reshaped the original clamp and reinstalled it). After removing the clamp the wheel slips right off and you have to remove the gear wheel that assures the forward action of the blades when it motion. It is not attached in any way and just lifts off. But one word of warning here. Neither the directions or any other reviewer at the time of this writing mentions that the gear wheel directs its forward motion by the wheel slipping over a little “key” or steel sliver that slides into a slot on the gear shaft. The key is loose after removal of the gear wheel and can easily fall out and be lost while moving the mower around during the sharpening process. Make sure you either keep an eye on it in the shaft, or remove it to a safe place. The actual sharpening process is quite easy, just time consuming. You spread the compound onto the blades with the little brush supplied and then turn the mower back wards with the crank provided. You will get tired, but you can rest and restart. Give it a good ten minutes. The more you crank the better the sharpening job. Oh and the crank does not slip over the entire shaft, it is snug and has to be wiggled on. You may want to tap it with a light hammer or screwdriver so you don’t have to keep stopping and pushing it back on during the spinning process. When you’re done, the reassembly is very easy, (don’t forget the little key if you removed it), and after cleaning up the excess compound, your mower will cut like its a brand new model. It really did make quite a difference for me and I highly recommend this simple kit that will perform the job easily. Push mower blades stay sharp a lot longer than power blades so a sharpening job every other season, or even every three should be enough. You have to remember that if you use a drill it has to be running in the right direction (not reverse) or it will unscrew the stone from the metalic base. Customer Review: “This simple balancing device quickly indicates if a mower blade is “out of balance” which can lead to an imbalance and the mower crankshaft and output shaft and internal bearings in the mower that could ultimately lead to damage and engine failure.Although this would be the extreme, this simple – and simple to use – device is a quick indicator that a mower blade needs some attention.This device does not repair the blade. This device does not improve the longevity of the mower as indicated in the advertisement, but I don’t consider that a defect; it simply indicates the need to either replace the blade or otherwise repair it.I placed the balancing device on the anvil part of my bench vice and put my mower blade on top of it for a visual determination. Don’t use the device on a soft surface like a rug or any surface that might “give” and cause the device to tilt. The best surface is hard, flat and horizontal: the relative condition of the mower blade is a visual assessment and having a flat, level surface under the device and blade provides a good visual reference.You may not need this device if you rely on professional mower blade sharpening services or simply replace your blade.Be aware, too, that if it’s not already obvious, additional tools are required to remove and reinstall your mower blade to check on the balancer.What this device is indispensable for, however is assessing the condition of heavily used blades or the blade on a used mower that you may purchase. Customer Review: “This review is for the newer “Silvey” steel back sharpener. I was reluctant to purchase after hearing all the bad reviews but it actually works better than I thought. The key is steadiness. There is no way I could have sharpened the blades on the mower because it’s a Honda HRX with dual blades but I don’t think it would have been steady enough if I could. My vise is broken so I ratchet strapped my drill to the bench and ran the blade through. The drill in the pic is electric and definitely has more rpm than my cordless. I don’t have an angle gauge but this doesn’t sharpen at a 30° angle. It’s more like 25° because I basically had to grind a new edge and could tell at the beginning of the grind. I was a little disappointed that it didn’t come with the level since I had to grind a lot off and not sure how balanced they are now but I already mowed with them and didn’t notice any excessive vibration. So basically I had no trouble, with at least one of them, so they are definitely worth the price.”

Customer Review: “The media could not be loaded. These are very good; better than I hoped they would be. Let me say right off the bat that you should ignore the vast majority of the 1-star reviews. Why? Because they are from people who have either no idea what they’re doing, when they try to sharpen mower blades, or have no patience, which is essential. Some things just take a little time to do RIGHT, and this is one of them. I have a lawn care business, so naturally, I have to sharpen the blades from my 4 different mowers frequently. That adds up to 10 blades to sharpen, which takes some time, and is generally a pain. I’ve always used a bench grinder, followed by files and sharpening stones, to achieve a good, sharp edge. But if you use a bench grinder, you know that it’s hard to free-hand any mower blade across a grinder wheel and get a consistent edge, because without some kind of fixed guidance system, it’s hard to maintain exact pressure along the length of the blade’s cutting section. So you often end up with a wavy pattern, lost metal, and inconsistent edge. Those factors don’t lend to extended blade life.But these sharpening wheels solve that scenario. Used correctly, they keep a consistent angle and pressure on the cutting area of any blade. If you look at the picture I’ve included, you can see that the edge has a bit of a wave to it, rather than a straight cutting surface, but that is from using the grinding wheel, in the past. The pic is not of new blades, but used ones, which I re-sharpened with this product. But notice the beautiful, consistent angle to the freshly-sharpened blade! That’s the beauty of these sharpening wheels; the angle is pre-set. You put it in your drill, fix the blade to be sharpened in a vise, and start running the wheel back and forth along the edge. In pretty short order, you have a professionally sharpened blade that’s ready to be put back into service. My only suggestion is to Not use a battery-operated drill for this procedure. Use a drill that plugs into an electrical outlet, because the process takes a little while to complete, and unless you have only 1 blade to sharpen, the drill’s speed will slow down, and you won’t get the results you’re after. Also, I read one review that said he used an air tool. Well, he’s not the only one who has air tools, but the speed of an air tool runs down as the compressor’s output runs down (until it kicks back on), just like battery-operated tools slow down. I very much recommend this product! If you have a modicum of patience, skill, and reasonable expectations, you will get the results you seek. Don’t listen to the nay-sayers. These things work, WAY better than a bench grinder and with a lot less time and work!”
