Customer Review: I an unsure as to what some are complaining about with this little mower. It IS a reel mower after all, and powered up by me, not oil and gasoline. I LOVE this little mower! I just got it last week, did nothing but pull it out of the box, put it together, which was a breeze, and starting cutting grass! My yard is 1/2 acre in size, with half of that being fairly flat, with a slight grade to it, and then my front and back yards both have slopes in them, with a constant upgrade in the backyard. Going up that hill was tough, only because I have allowed myself to get so out of shape. The mower itself was fine, and cut the grass great! It was me needing to stop and catch my breath every few “laps” on that backyard, and parts of the front, but that was not the mower’s fault. That’s me, getting myself back into better physical shape for using this little mower.I found it to be a breeze to use. Yes, I did have a few areas where it would miss some weeds or an onion or two, but I found that if I lined it up with the actual center of the mower reel it would then cut right through those onion weeds with a second, or third swipe. Remember that it cuts like a pair of scissors and its best area for cutting thick grass or onion weeds is in the center of the blade, or reel. And if it did not cut through it after centering it up, and giving it another couple of quick swipes, then I would just reach down and pull the onion weed out myself. But this was rare. Overall it did a great job!I am very, very happy with it and would recommend it to those who have smaller yards like myself, and decently flat yards. Like I said, I do have a long grade and hill in my backyard especially, and my front has slopes in it, but it cut through them just fine. I just had to take several water breaks and catching-my-breath breaks. But as the spring moves into summer I am sure that this little mower will get me in better and better physical shape, too, as I use it. We’re talking couch potato here, so those of you who already run or walk on a regular basis, this will be a piece of cake for you.I will consider sharpening the blades down the road, but it did just fine right out of the box. The only downsides are, it is going to take a little more physical umph, push and strength to move it up those slopes in my yard, but overall that is better for me. And I will do what others suggested and use WD40 or Synthetic Oil on it to keep it in good running order. I do think the handle is a little too flimsy, but it’s okay and tolerable. Overall I am very, very happy with it, and no, I am not a reel mower salesperson, I am a woman, whom happens to be a little bit overweight, am 5’2″, and 49 years old, and I LOVE this little mower! Customer Review: After cutting my lawn with a gas-powered mower last summer, I wanted to simplify things. I really don’t want to stress over spark plugs and oil and gasoline, and hoping that my engine will start when I pull the cord. All the maintenance. We already have a car for that. I wanted something I could understand, that worked well. This does the trick. I honestly look forward to cutting the lawn now. It’s a fun experience. I like the 20-in width because you tend to overlap as you travel back and forth across your lawn anyway, so it’s great that you don’t have to do as many passes as you would with a narrower mower. I like not having to make sure I have enough gasoline to cut my lawn, especially as gas has increased in recent months. The only fuel I need is in my body. Our lawn is mostly level, yet this does give me a bit of good exercise, though nothing too extreme at all. What I lose in machine-propelled front-wheel drive I make up for in a healthier heart. I’ll take it. This is much quieter than an electric or gas-powered mower, so I am able to cut grass at 7:00 a.m. before it gets very hot or the day gets busy, and not bother anyone. The first time I used it, my wife didn’t even know I was outside her window cutting grass. I’d been reading up before my purchase, and I learned that a reel mower is better for your grass due to its cutting method, working much more like scissors rather than a rotating horizontal blade that tends to leave the tips of grass brown and leaves behind a trail of “hay” unless you use a bagger on your mower. Pretty simple to put together but a little terrifying if your hand were to slip when you’re putting the bracket onto the wheel, the instruction booklets that it came with had you doing it in different orders the photo instructions that I took a picture of make more sense. Customer Review: I just purchased a new home with a 1/5 acre yard. Most people warned me not to try to use a Push Reel Lawn mower as it would be too exhausting. Some warned that the results would not be good. I didn’t want to buy a gasoline powered lawnmower at this time as I had so many expenses to deal with moving. I did need to keep my yard in shape.It took me about 30 minutes to put the lawnmower together. I didn’t read the instructions. No tools were required. By the time I finished the assembly, it was dark outside. I decided to give the lawnmower a try in the dark. I spent about 30 min cutting the front yard. As it was dark, I didn’t see how I did.until the next day.The next morning, I went out to look at my work. I was surprised. The yard looked great. The next evening, I cut the back yard. The results were also very good.The biggest challenge is that small twigs and sticks will stop the mower. To clear the mower, I reverse the blade with my foot. I can mow over top of hoses without cutting them.I would guess that it takes me about 30% more time to use the Great States Reel Mower than a gasoline powered one. The benefit is that I do get a workout. I don’t have to buy and store gasoline in the garage. I can mow at night without bothering my neighbors and the results are just as good as using a powered mower.My yard is possibly more yard than ideal for push mowing. I had used Push Reel mowers when I was a kid. Those were very heavy with solid wood handles and much heavier hardware. The Great States is much easier to use than the old fashioned ones. I am amazed at how it is just the right weight to not jump when pushing it and not feel like you a pushing a shopping cart with a broken wheel. It is very smooth and can easily be pushed with one had with little effort. My grass was high and think due to our battery powered mowers batteries keep dying. This does not take that much force to push. Keep th handle low with a gentle but firm grip. If it bogs down check your grip and form.Clear your yard of small and big sticks, you should do this anyway with any lawn mower to protect the blade and help it to last longer between sharpening.Go at a steady pace if you stop take two steps back to restart.When cutting grass always keep the line of your last mow in the middle of the mower so you do now miss sections. No matter what kind of lawn mower you use I advice this. Never wheel on wheel but center that last wheel line.I use the mower on its lowest setting. You can buy a bag for it, it has the area to attach one. The mower took me not even 5 minutes to put together it was that easy!! I would clean the blade with a paint brush and wd40 the blades to keep them from rusting. The mower may struggle to catch all the grass if some blades are bent down or if the grass is too long. With this, its recommended cutting the grass more frequently, going in opposite directions, and overlapping each pass. While this may reduce the effective cutting width from 18 inches to around 12-14 inches, it ensures a thorough and even cut. It actually takes around the same amount of time to cut the ~4000 sq foot I cut with this than with the rotary gas mower and that is comparing a 21″ cut to this. Perhaps its because its lighter, I can walk faster, and turning is easier too?For maintenance and accessories – Maintaining the sharpness of the blades is important for optimal performance, and although I haven’t had the need to sharpen them yet, there are sharpening kits available. Additionally, the option to purchase a bagger is available, but personally, I prefer leaving the clippings on the lawn as natural fertilizer. Just be sure to pick up any twigs or anything else the blades may catch on during use, as you’ll come to a complete stop as it jams into the cutting bed. At least with a reel mower you don’t have to keep your hand on the push-bar, so you can easily stop to pick something up. I even look around to ‘de-weed’ the lawn in that area as I come across things. Sometimes I’ll carry or attach a small bag to the unit to store the twigs or anything else I pickup so I can throw it out when done.Also, it’s worth noting that the mower throws the clippings backward, so wearing long pants and shoes is key to avoid getting them on your legs. Though I’m sure it would work with some additional leg-power, this mower works best on flat lawns without too many weeds, as it may struggle with uneven terrain as it’s self-powered and the weed stems can also stop the blade reel in its tracks if they are too thick.One other thing, is that you won’t really get the traditional ‘stripes’ of a rotatry mower. I’ve seen others modify the reel mower to drag a lead / pvc pipe with sand in it, but personally I don’t bother. As long as the grass looks trimmed and neat, I’m happy.You also can’t beat the workout it provides – I get a solid ~30 minutes of mowing every few days and you work up quite a sweat.Overall, I wanted to try reel mowing for the season and the 18-Inch 5-Blade Reel American Lawn Mower is a solid choice that fit my needs. While it may require some additional effort one of the standout things is since its nearly quiet, you can mow at any time, and even when its wet – two things a gas powered mower just can’t (or shouldn’t) do. Really – you can’t bet the cut quality and that’s why I’m doing this, for a healthier lawn.

Customer Review: After a friend bought one of these, I was intrigued so I asked to use it to mow both my front and rear lawn. It was a bit of a workout (that’s a good thing) and I was so impressed that I bought one for myself to replace my standard gas mower (22″ Briggs & Stratton). So, it came a few days later and took all of 10 minutes to assemble (just the handle).Other reviewers have stated some of the things below, but I will too (from my perspective).- this unit (and other reel mowers) are really a breath of fresh air. No fumes to mess with.- this is not for the ego-challenged suburbanites who pride themselves on the $500 gas “Cadillac” mower and buy computers based on Megahertz rating. I will leave it at that.- this unit cuts incredibly fine if the yard was properly cut beforehand (not mowing for the first time all year at 4″ height could cause a problem). No grasscatcher needed at all.- I live in Oklahoma with almost all standard Bermudagrass, which grows at a rapid pace in summer with our 95-degree days. I find I have to mow a little more often with this mower, which is no big deal since it really is quite relaxing to use.- After using this mower twice and not having used a gas mower for over 10 days on my lawn, I was *really* impressed by how much greener my Bermudagrass was. Seriously. It seems the “chopping” of the gas mower (which would leave nasty circle sometimes) was less healthy for my grass than this reel mower’s cut, which seemingly mulches the grass clippings and seals the blades themselves. A quick Google search on some horticulture sites confirmed that reel mowers are the most healthy way to mow a lawn (for any grass).- I have to overlap rows to ensure I get all blades cut. I generally overlap about 1/3 of the mower’s wdith to ensure each pass gets cut about twice (roughly).- Another reviewer said that just after mowing with this mower, it will not have the pristine, “just cut” look a gas mower usually provides. This is true – there are no “tracks” to indicate to others that the yard was just mowed. Umm, for me I have easily gotten used to having a much more greener yard with a total and whole “cut look” than having 20-inch tracks throughout the yard. Once you get used to it, it’s not an issue. After I get done mowing, the yard is pretty darn close to perfection (as in a gas mower cut), and looks “whole”.- I cut my Bermudagrass at the lowest-height setting (1/2″) and my yard looks fantastic at that setting with proper watering and fertilizing very few months.- The foam handle makes this mower extremely easy to handle and use, and it does give a decent aerobic workout if it takes 30 minutes or so to mow. Very nice indeed. I’ve never had a self-propelled gas mower either, since I view yardwork as exercise and not “armchair quarterbacking”.- Instead of continuing to pollute, I bought a rechargeable blower and trimmer and now can completely take care of my yards without any gas pollution whatsoever. Can’t say that for my neighbors and their guzzling SUVs and huge and noisy gas mowers.- Don’t want to continue bashing gas mower “people” (because I was one for a long time), but try one of these and make a change. If you take care of your lawn with a gas mower now, the transition to this reel mower will be simple and more than likely, you’ll enjoy mowing again.- Can’t stress this enough – like many reviewers have said, spray the blades with WD-40 after every mow and the next time you will have a well-oiled machine (no pun intended) with perfectly sharp blades, which will mow extremely quiet. I have mowed once at 7:30am (was bored) and did not wake a soul in my neighborhood since this thing was so quiet (much less noise than a rechargeable trimmer). Nothing is quite as bothersome as sitting on the deck in a backyard with a nice *beverage* and being deafened by a gas mower starting as soon as you begin to relax.That’s it. I have started conversations with neighbors already who can’t believe I am using 100-year old technology to mow my yard, but they all come away impressed with the cut and my explanation(s). I am keeping the gas mower for now, but it will probably go away soon. Some things in life are best enjoyed simple when everything else is so complex, and this is one of those things.

Customer Review: Honestly really good, I don’t have the space for anything bigger and a manual mower and this one is really easy to take apart to store. It works great, I let my grass grow for about 3 weeks before since I just moved in and never own a mower before, and I was nervous about it cutting through the long grass but it did pretty good honestly. I put my bikini on and tanned while doing it and I was out there for maybe an hour or so (with a few breaks to pet my dog or throw her ball) my yard looks so good and I’m so please with this mower, it’s super light as well. The only thing is that I couldn’t use the grass catcher this first round because it kept getting stuck in the long grass but it shouldn’t be that long in the first place so I can’t even be mad about that, I did use the catcher on a patch of short grass and it worked great though!! Putting it together took maybe 10 minute and was super easy, I was confused at first thought it kinda seems upside down in a way and it didn’t roll on my hard wood but once I put it on the grass it all made sense 😆 I do have Bahia grass so the long piece that split in two didn’t quite get cut because they were too long but if you start with a flat base and do it regularly they won’t get long! I love it! Great for the price! Now my pup can play freely❤️🐶

Customer Review: I bought this to mow my new installed Bermuda turf… (It’s hard to crank though… LOL!) it was extremely easy to assemble and the blades were sharp from the factory. I found it very addictive to mow with despite having an expensive Zero Turn mower and a new rotary mower. Obviously the noise level is much lower than a motorized mower and the gas savings are a plus. It is light weight which was perfect for my newly installed turf. I am mowing approximately 3200 sq ft around our house (I use my Zero Turn for the rest of my 3 acres). I have yet to have to sharpen the blades or to adjust the bed knife. IF it ever wears out, I would buy another one immediately!!! My wife is 5’2″ and barely 100 lbs and she has NO PROBLEM mowing with it… it is easy to push. When I finish mowing, I WD-40 the bed knife and then run the blades over it by pulling it along my concrete drive to distribute the WD-40 on all the blades. Great mower for the price!!!

Customer Review: Purchased this so the kids could mow a small section of the yard that’s fenced off and I can’t get the riding mower into. They love having a mower they can use themselves, and it does a great job cutting a variety of grasses (Bermuda, misc. local grasses, and even taller, thick St. Augustine) but it may take several passes in different directions for the most uniform final product. It is easy and smooth to push though, so that works out fine. Seems to stay sharp and when oiled regularly after use, and stays in great shape. The grass seems healthier and happier after being cut with this mower, and I love that the kids (11) can do it without my help. Great for use in a smaller space or yard – wouldn’t want to cut a half-acre or more with it (at least not of our thick mix of grasses and weeds), but is fantastic for our lush extended chicken run. Would highly recommend for someone who wants a quiet, conventional mower that doesn’t need fuel, will give you a healthier lawn, and will last a long time.
